Project Portfolio - Ground-Tire Rubber (GTR) Modified Asphalt

Recycled tires are
ground to a fine powder
In 2006, S.T.A.T.E. Testing provided the engineering for the first Illinois demonstration projects using terminal-blended ground-tire rubber (GTR) modified asphalt. Since then, Cook and DuPage Counties, CDOT, and the Illinois Tollway have placed GTR mixes.
A promising University of Illinois research study provided support for the Illinois Tollway to include GTR Asphalt in their Congestion Relief program. GTR asphalt is a "green" product, recycling about 1,000 tires per lane mile for each inch of asphalt. GTR is no more costly than polymer-modified asphalt. Also, it reduces use of landfill space for tire disposal.
