Project Portfolio

S.T.A.T.E. Testing has been blessed to be involved in many major and innovative projects. Our project portfolio consists of work performed on much of the Chicagoland expressway system, the Illinois Tollway system, and O’Hare International Airport. Some of our most innovative projects included those associated with the green movement including GTR, FRAP and Warm-mix asphalt.

Project Portfolio - FRAP Fractionated Recycled Asphalt Pavement

S.T.A.T.E. Testing provided the engineering support for the introduction of fractionated RAP into the Illinois market. In 2007, we helped the Illinois Tollway with demonstration projects, seeking to determine if the amount of RAP that could be used in their asphalt construction could be increased. These projects were successful; and the Tollway doubled the amount of RAP allowed in their HMA mixes.

Fractionating RAP into multiple sizes allows for more control during production than was previously possible with single size RAP. Increasing the amount of RAP in asphalt takes advantage of both the high quality aggregate and residual asphalt cement (binder) in the original pavement. This recycling concept is both "green" and cost-saving.
