This story is typical of the efforts of ECFA’s Pregnancy Support Services program. The names are fictitious; the story is true.

***********************************

Liana was 18 years old and 7 months pregnant when she found Pregnancy Support Services. She initially called for assistance in obtaining medical care. She recently had moved to a new city with her boyfriend, Dominic, so that he would have more employment opportunities with his father’s construction site. However, Liana had great difficulty identifying a medical practice that would accept her at this stage of her pregnancy. Her family was not available for support, because they had recently made the decision to move to Puerto Rico, and they did not invite her to go with them. Liana found herself without family support, local friends, a medical provider, or access to transportation.

This is where PSS stepped in. A PSS Counselor transported Liana to her county health department to help her complete all the appropriate paperwork to receive public assistance, including medical coverage and an appointment with a doctor. Liana continued to meet with the PSS Counselor on a weekly basis to prepare for the upcoming delivery and to learn how to care for an infant.

Due to the numerous rainy days we all experienced this summer, Dominic was frequently left unable to work at his outdoor construction job. This left the family unable to afford basic necessities, including their rent for a one-bedroom apartment. Liana contacted several agencies on her own to request financial assistance, but she could not find any support. She eventually called her PSS Counselor in tears because she feared they would lose their apartment just as the baby was born. Liana was unaware that PSS had a Benevolence Fund, and when her PSS Counselor offered to cover a portion of their rent, she was in tears again. This time, however, her tears were the result of being overwhelmed by this gift of grace.

Because of the generosity of previous donors, PSS was able to offer a financial gift so that Liana and Dominic could pay their rent on time, and still have a small amount in reserve to pay for other weekly expenses. Dominic now has resumed working full-time, and the family has been able to meet all of their monthly expenses, especially since the PSS Counselor has given Liana information about making a monthly budget. Liana and Dominic were moved from a place of fear and shame to experience hope and grace. They anxiously await the birth of their son, Alejandro.

The PSS team feels the challenge of needing to find resources for our clients in their times of distress, and time and again, we are amazed at the kindness and generosity of our community. We are delighted to be “Pregnancy Support Servants” and to witness God’s grace in action. With sincere hearts we appreciate your thoughtful consideration as we strive to continue our mission.
